This is a course on determining causes and effective treatments in persons with dementia. It is based on the book, Hiding the Stranger in the Mirror: A Detective’s Manual for Solving Problems Associated with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, by Cameron J. After completing this course, learners will be able:
- To understand that responsive behavior in persons with dementia is not random, and usually is in response to an unmet human need.
- To internalize the use of three key steps of a person-centered approach to dementia care.
- Why did this happen?
- Ask the resident.
- Just try.
- To internalize approaches to determining the cause of a responsive behavior and to match cause with nonpharmacologic treatment.
