This is a course on determining causes and effective treatments in persons with dementia. It is based on the book, Hiding the Stranger in the Mirror: A Detective’s Manual for Solving Problems Associated with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, by Cameron J. Camp, Ph.D., and is available for purchase on the CARD website at shop.cen4ard.com/products/hiding-the-stranger-in-the-mirror.

After completing this course, learners will be able:

  1. To understand that responsive behavior in persons with dementia is not random, and usually is in response to an unmet human need.
  2. To internalize the use of three key steps of a person-centered approach to dementia care.
    • Why did this happen?
    • Ask the resident.
    • Just try.
  3. To internalize approaches to determining the cause of a responsive behavior and to match cause with nonpharmacologic treatment.
