This course continues to explore the Key Montessori Principles, looking at the 2nd set of 4 principles with in-depth explanations and real-world examples.
Part 2 of the course covers the following:
• Principle 5 – Physical Skills. Focus on what the person can do.
• Principle 6 – Match your speed to theirs. Slow down!
• Principle 7 – Use visual hints, cues or templates.
• Principle 8 – Give the person something to hold.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Assess and utilize retained skills in people with dementia in order to create more opportunities for engagement
- Recognize the importance of communicating with people at the appropriate speed to facilitate understanding and engagement
- Create “cognitive ramps” and environmental supports to maximize independence in people with dementia.
- Provide examples of what people with dementia can hold during care tasks and activities to encourage participation and engagement
